A white wine with an extraordinary aromatic bouquet. A small territory for such a big name.
The vineyards of Condrieu includes 7 communes and 3 departments: Rhone, Loire and Ardeche on the right bank of the Rhone, for an overall area of 124 hectares. The main villages covering the “appellation” are Condrieu, Vérin and Chavanay. The vineyards of Condrieu border with Côte Rôtie on the north and is included in the the St. Joseph on the south. It is a white wine produced from the viognier grape. As in Côte Rôtie, the vineyard is terraced with dry stone walls and the vines are led by two on poles. The typical pruning is the guyot; the yield of the harvest is 36 hl / ha.
The famous sailors who, from father to son, sailed between “Kingdom and Empire” were recruited exactly from Condrieu. Later on, the coopers who produced the barrels used in Côte du Rhône settled in the area. In the fifteenth century, Condrieu wine was poured in feasts and offered to noble personalities. Nowadays it reveals confidential treasures of subtlety and flavour. Condrieu gained the A. O. C. in 1940.
The soils of Condrieu are, like in Côte Rôtie, granite steep slopes overlooking the river, not allowing mechanization. The climate is continental moderate, dry and hot during the summer rainy in other seasons. The mistral is present as in Côte Rôtie.
